Digital Designer (UX/UI)

We’re looking for a mid level designer, with a mixture of UX and UI skills, to join our design team and produce effective ecommerce experiences for a wide range of retailers and their customers.

Who we are

JH is a digital agency based in Nottingham that specialises in creating ecommerce websites on the Magento platform. Over the past ten years, we’ve worked with a broad spectrum of brands, providing strategy, design, and development for online stores that are used by millions of people. Our industry-leading practice has cultivated long-term client relationships, won international ecommerce awards, and allowed us to grow the business year-on-year. We’re building on that success by expanding the design team.

We’re looking for you to deliver great ecommerce experiences for our clients and their users. You’ll be working across a variety of projects, each with their own unique challenges. Your experience will help you define the project goals and requirements, and deliver effective solutions using UX methodologies. You’ll have great attention to detail in delivering visually appealing interfaces, and will be active in collaborating with colleagues and clients. You’ll also have a role in helping to support the rest of the design team, as well as receiving coaching to continue your growth as a designer.

Main responsibilities:

  • Gather project requirements and define design briefs
  • Conduct discovery activities such as site audits, competitor analysis and surveys
  • Produce UX deliverables such as wireframes, user flows and prototypes
  • Produce UI deliverables such as mood boards, style guides and mockups
  • Produce creative assets such as icons, illustrations and imagery
  • Present work to colleagues and clients, interpret feedback and develop designs
  • Document and hand off your work and assets successfully both internally and to clients
  • Collaborate with developers to review and refine built designs
  • Support our sales activities by contributing to pitches
  • Support other members of the design team, collaborate and share knowledge

You’ll also be involved with internal projects:

  • Improve and promote design practice and culture within the business
  • Deploy our brand guidelines across different applications
  • Provide assets and content for our marketing campaigns
  • Contribute to community events like Meet Magento and Design Exchange

We’re looking for someone who can fulfil most of the criteria listed below. You should be able to demonstrate your existing skills and experience using relevant examples from past work. However, we don’t expect you to match everything — it’s more important that you have a passion for lifelong learning that will enable you to continue growing at JH.

The main things we’re looking for:

  • Experience working in a similar design role
  • Portfolio that demonstrates a track record of successful design work
  • Experience of producing and presenting high quality UX and UI deliverables
  • Experience of creating responsive web designs
  • Ability to work autonomously or in collaboration with others
  • Ability to communicate ideas clearly in writing and face-to-face
  • Ability to receive and respond to constructive feedback and offer it to others
  • Ability to adapt your approach for different project constraints
  • Understanding of front-end technologies (HTML/CSS/JS)
  • Desire to continue learning and help others improve

What we’ll look for in your portfolio:

  • The strength and depth of your creative skills
  • The process and thinking used to solve problems
  • Care and attention in the final product

Other things that would set you apart:

  • Experience of designing ecommerce websites
  • Experience of participating in design workshops
  • Experience of conducting user research activities
  • Desire to help contribute to or speak at community events

You‘ll get a competitive salary and a range of benefits including:

  • Flexitime and working from home
  • Generous allowance for annual leave
  • Budget for professional development (e.g. attending design conferences)
  • Budget for personal wellness (e.g. taking yoga classes)
  • Your choice of hardware and software

  • Explanation of what attracts you to this position
