With three days full of community meetups, talks, fun and games – we take a look at where to be, and what to do, this January at Nottingham’s essential digital design conference, New Adventures.
Great conferences don’t just offer attendees the chance to glean takeaways from informative speakers. They also provide a place for a community to make connections and share ideas themselves. A key part of the New Adventures experience is the varied opportunities to meet new people, particularly via a rich program of fringe events.
For 2019, a number of past favourites, like the bowling tournament, are being joined by new activities, like a coffee tour, and receiving support from several of Nottingham’s local meetups. So whether you’re partial to a macchiato, or long winding walks, there’ll be something on offer to involve you in the wider conference experience.
Support local communities
On the day of the conference itself, what better way to spend your lunchtime than by listening to lightning talks from inspirational local speakers? Get to know your fellow New Adventures attendees with some lighthearted networking (facilitated fun), brought to you by the wonderful team behind Women in Tech Nottingham.
If you know anything about us here at JH, you’ll know how proud we are of our connections with the WiTNotts event. We can’t wait to attend the lunchtime takeover, and we’re certain it’ll be one not to miss!

Celebrating three years of Design Exchange
When New Adventures isn’t in town, the locals meet at Design Exchange — Nottingham’s monthly design meetup featuring guest speakers. January will see the community event celebrate its third birthday with a warm-up event for the main conference. Look forward to an extra-special evening of inspiring talks, treats and surprises, plus the usual welcoming atmosphere. Entry is free, as always.
You can follow our monthly event on Twitter, and join the mailing list, to stay updated on news.
Wed 23rd | From 7pm | Antenna, Nottingham | Conference badge pick-up 7 – 8pm
If Design Exchange Nottingham doesn’t quite take your fancy, how about getting competitive at the legendary bowling tournament – hosted this time round by JH.
We all know that it wouldn’t be New Adventures without the bowling! Which is why we’re proud to be organising the official fringe event this year. JH Marketing Manager, Phoebe Haig, explains why we jumped at the chance of taking this on:
Even though we’ve got a London office now too, Nottingham will always be JH’s home – and so a quality design conference like New Adventures being in the heart of our city is great news, we knew we’d support its return however we could. Secondly, we love socialising with others in the community, and aren’t averse to a bit of “friendly” competition, through bowling! Put simply, this couldn’t be more up our street.
It doesn’t matter if you are a full team of six, or a solo bowler looking to make some new industry friends, everyone is welcome to join the tournament and be in with the chance of winning some great prizes! To get the ball rolling, and make sure you don’t miss out on a lane, make sure you register online.
For more details about registration, and our lottery system, please visit the website. Spectators are also welcome to come along and have a drink too!
Wed 23rd | 8pm – 12am | MFA Bowling Nottingham | Conference badge pick-up from 8.30pm
If bowling isn’t up your alley, how about getting involved in a friendly (slightly competitive) five-a-side football tournament?
We’re all for a bit of competition here at JH, and it sounds like Fr00tball is really bringing it to New Adventures this time – the tournament sounds like great fun, regardless of whether you’re on the pitch or laughing from the sidelines.
Fri 25th | 2pm – 4pm | Forest Recreation Ground
Party the night away
The New Adventures team will be taking over the stunning Nottingham Contemporary building after the conference – just a stone’s-throw away from our very own Lace Market HQ!
The art gallery is one of the UK’s largest centres for contemporary art – and for one night only it belongs to New Adventures! With a great mix of environments to suit all (including loud and quiet spaces), and a lovely selection of both hard and soft drinks, we can see that the team have made a great effort to ensure that this event is inclusive for all attendees.
Thurs 24th | 7pm – 12am | Nottingham Contemporary | No admittance without name badge | Fully accessible | No under 18s after 10pm | Details TBC
Shake off those post-conference blues
As seasoned conference-goers, we are all too familiar with those post-conference blues!
After two jam-packed days of inspiration and fun, attendees are welcomed to get outside for a lovely morning run alongside the river, or grab a coffee with the photography club – a lovely and relaxing way to wind down and wrap up the conference week.
So there we have it! A great conference, with an even greater line-up of fringe events – we’re definitely counting down the days until New Adventures 2019.
